Chapter Seventeen
There was a full moon, but Simon didn't open the drapes in Hugh Maitland's study. Even though it was well past midnight, he couldn't take the chance of anyone seeing him there. Light from a single taper flickered along the slender wire he slipped into the lock of Maitland's desk. He turned the wire, easing open the mechanism. A soft click echoed in the silence of the room. And beyond the walls of the study he became aware of another sound. Footsteps.
He snuffed the candle between his thumb and forefinger. He held his breath, listening as the footsteps approached the study. It was a woman, her slippered footsteps light on the polished oak parquet lining the hall. The door to the library opened and closed. A few moments later, light glowed beneath the connecting door.
One of the Maitland ladies was making a midnight raid on the library. Phoebe, no doubt. She seldom had her pretty little nose out of a book. At fifteen she lived her adventures between leather-bound covers. He had done the same until he was twelve. Then the adventures had become far too real.
He remained crouched behind Maitland's desk, listening to the soft sounds from the library, feeling like the traitor he had been sent to catch. He was getting too close to these people. He was getting too close to Emily.
In the past week, since the shooting, he had chipped his way through her defenses. Only to find his own defenses breached by the beautiful red-haired tigress. He wanted her. Not just for a moment. But for the rest of his life.
He rested his brow against Hugh Maitland's desk. Men were being lost because of a traitor. The blackguard had to be stopped. Even if it meant tearing this family to shreds. Even if it meant destroying any chance he might have of winning his lady.
